Because traditional Korean costumes had no pockets, cloth bags were carried on the waist or on the breast as early as the Three Kingdoms Period. There were round bags and bags with ridges.

The bags were ornamented with embroideries of the traditional designs for long life and wealth. Dragon and bonghwang(bonghwang) auspicious bird designs were embroidered on the bags of kings and queens respectively.

It was a court custom that kings would present each royal kin with a bag of roasted beans to wish them good luck and happiness on New Year’s Day.
