Norigae(Pendants) – Traditional accessories
Norigae, or pendants, were personal ornaments that were attached to jeogori jacket strings or chima skirts of Korean women, including the ladies of the royal court and commoner women. A pendant is made up of a top hook, string, ornamental objects, knots and tassels. The number of tassels was dependent on the number of ornamental objects.
Three-tassel pendants were divided into jungsamjak or large pendants and were used by the ladies of the royal court and upper class women. Sosamjak, or small pendants were worn by young women and girls. Korean women ornamented their rather simple traditional hanbok jacket and skirt with good luck pendants. They wore large pendants for celebrations and simpler ones for everyday.
Women of the Yangban(upper class) gave their pendants to daughters and daughters-in-law, thus passing on the tradition of the family.
